ORIGINS OF
JIU-JITSU
Jiu-Jitsu traces its roots back to ancient India during the time of Buddhist monks. Faced with frequent attacks during their travels, these monks devised a method of defense, giving birth to what we now know as Jiu-Jitsu. Translating to “gentle art,” Jiu-Jitsu is built upon three fundamental principles: technique, leverage, and foundation. Originating in India, it later found its way to China and eventually Japan.
Mitsuyo Maeda, also known as “Count Koma,” played a pivotal role in the early development of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. In 1914, Maeda and his group of Japanese fighters embarked on a mission to spread Judo in Brazil. While some settled in Manaus, others, including Maeda himself, established academies in cities like Belém do Pará. It was during this time that Maeda crossed paths with Gastão Gracie, a father keen on introducing his son Carlos to the Japanese martial art.
The Gracie family became pivotal figures in the evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, learning from Mitsuyo Maeda and later establishing the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Rio de Janeiro in 1925. Their relentless pursuit of excellence led to significant advancements in the art form.
Championing the Efficiency of Jiu-Jitsu
The Gracie’s, including Carlos, Gaston, George, Oswaldo, and Helio, actively promoted Jiu-Jitsu by issuing challenges to showcase its effectiveness. Over the years, the Gracie Academy grew and relocated several times, always striving to uphold the legacy of this martial art. Grand Master Helio Gracie, in particular, revolutionized Jiu-Jitsu, enabling individuals of smaller stature to defend themselves against larger opponents. His contributions earned him the title of “The Godfather of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.”
Helio Gracie: “The Godfather of BJJ”
Hélio Gracie, born on October 1, 1913, alongside his brothers, pioneered the development of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, later known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Revered as the Godfather of BJJ, Helio’s influence transcended martial arts, earning him recognition as one of Brazil’s earliest sports heroes. Throughout his lifetime, Helio and his family members continued to leave an indelible mark on combat sports, including mixed martial arts (MMA).
Royler Gracie: A Legacy of Excellence
Royler Gracie, born on December 6, 1965, began his journey in Jiu-Jitsu at the tender age of three under the guidance of his father, Helio Gracie, and other family members. As a key figure at the Gracie Humaitá Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Royler played a vital role in promoting and teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His remarkable career boasts numerous championships, including four World Jiu-Jitsu titles and three ADCC championships. Master Royler continues to spread Jiu-jitsu throughout the world.
Cleber Luciano: A Journey of Dedication
Cleber Luciano, born on December 15, 1973, embarked on his martial arts journey at the age of six, initially exploring judo before delving into Jiu-Jitsu under the tutelage of Royler Gracie. Throughout his career, Cleber excelled in both Judo and Jiu-Jitsu tournaments winning World and Pan American Championships, earning black belts in both disciplines. His prowess on the mat and coaching expertise led him to the United States, where he continues to make significant contributions to the martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu community.
