The Graves Family: A Jiu‑Jitsu Journey That Became a Family Legacy

Some families find connection through weekend outings, sports, or shared hobbies. For the Graves family, that bond was built on the mats — one class, one roll, and one milestone at a time.

What began as a way for a father to support his teenage son has grown into a multi‑year journey that transformed their health, confidence, and family dynamic. Today, the Graves family is woven into the heart of our academy, with each member carving out their own path in Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu.

How It All Started

Dan Graves has always been an athlete. A former college football player, he was no stranger to hard work or physical training. But after college, life got busy, and although martial arts interested him, he never fully pursued it.

That changed when his oldest son, Will, then 12, decided he wanted to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as part of his dream to become a police officer. To prepare, Dan and his wife enrolled him in a program and supported him from the sidelines — until COVID hit.

With gyms closed, the Graves family turned their garage into a training space. They bought mats, followed online lessons, and trained together several nights a week. Soon, Dan’s younger son Van Alan and daughter joined in, and even Lauren, his wife, began taking the women’s self‑defense classes online. Jiu‑jitsu became a full family activity, a way to stay active and connected during uncertain times.

When a certified training center opened near their home teaching the same curriculum, they were following online, the family decided to try in‑person classes. The environment, the instructors, and the energy of live training made an immediate impact. Dan and Will enrolled in mid-2021— and never looked back.

A Transformation on and off the Mats

Training sparked a major transformation for Dan. He lost 50 pounds, regained his athleticism, and rediscovered his competitive drive. He entered his first tournament after only eight months of training, earning a bronze medal. Soon after, he and Will were competing side‑by‑side, each bringing home medals and pushing each other to grow.

Today, Dan is a 4th‑stripe purple belt, training jiu‑jitsu five days a week and adding kickboxing twice a week. His dedication has become a model for his entire family.

Will: Teen Student, Certified Instructor, Youth program lead to Coast Guard

Will’s journey has been one of leadership from the start. Before leaving for the U.S. Coast Guard this January, he earned his purple belt and became a Certified Instructor at the academy. He served as the Youth Class Lead, helping guide, mentor, and inspire our younger students with patience, discipline, and a calm teaching style that made him a favorite among the kids.

Now serving in the Coast Guard, Will continues his jiu‑jitsu training and has expanded into law‑enforcement–focused defensive tactics, building on the foundation he developed here. His time as an instructor shaped not only his skillset but also his confidence as a leader — something he carries with him into his service career.

Van Alan: From New Student to Youth Coach

In December 2022, the Graves family added another chapter to their jiu‑jitsu story when Van Alan stepped onto the mats at Atomic Jiu-Jitsu for the first time. His progress has been remarkable. Now 17 years old and has a blue belt, Van has become a fantastic assistant coach in our Youth program. His ability to connect with kids, explain techniques clearly, and bring positive energy to every class makes him a natural leader. Watching him grow from a brand‑new student to a trusted assistant coach has been one of the most rewarding parts of the Graves family journey.

A Family That Trains Together

For the Graves family, jiu‑jitsu is more than a sport — it’s a shared experience that has strengthened their relationships, improved their health, and created lifelong memories. From garage mats to tournaments, from white belts to purple and blue, from home training to the Coast Guard, their story is a powerful example of what happens when a family commits to learning and growing together. We’re proud to have the Graves family as part of our Atomic community, and we can’t wait to see where their journey leads next.
