Respect can be Earned and Lost

By Adrian J Trevino

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), respect is not just a formality; it’s an integral part of the
culture that shapes the community on and off the mats. Earning respect in BJJ involves
more than just technical prowess; it encompasses values such as humility,
sportsmanship, and dedication.
To earn respect in BJJ, consistency and effort are key. Showing up to train regularly,
regardless of victories or losses, demonstrates commitment and respect for the art.
Respecting your training partners by practicing safely, attentively, and with humility isequally important. Treating everyone in the gym, regardless of rank, with kindness and
respect fosters a positive atmosphere and builds camaraderie.

However, respect can be lost through behavior that contradicts these values.Arrogance, disrespect towards training partners or instructors, and disregarding the
rules of the gym are surefire ways to diminish respect within the BJJ community. Poor
sportsmanship, such as gloating over victories or making excuses for losses, can also
tarnish one’s reputation.

If respect has been lost due to past actions, rebuilding it requires sincere effort and
introspection. Acknowledging mistakes and apologizing, if necessary, shows humility
and a willingness to improve. Demonstrating consistent respect towards others through
actions, such as helping teammates and showing genuine sportsmanship during
training and competitions, can gradually restore trust and admiration within the
community.

Moreover, focusing on personal growth and development in BJJ can also contribute to
earning respect anew. Dedicate yourself to improving your skills, showing resilience in
the face of challenges, and embodying the values of BJJ both on and off the mats. Over
time, consistent effort and genuine respect for the art and its practitioners can rebuild a
positive reputation within the BJJ community. Remember, respect in BJJ isn’t just about
technical prowess; it’s about embodying the principles of humility, perseverance, and
mutual respect that define this beautiful martial art.
